Mellons Bay School

Mellons Bay School is a full primary in the heart of the Howick community. The seahorse runs through the school's visual identity as a nod to its coastal surroundings, and the school takes genuine pride in the generations of families who have passed through its doors.

Mellons Bay needed a new website. In researching other school websites they liked, my name kept coming up. That is the kind of introduction that stays with you.

The school wanted something authentic, a website that genuinely reflected who they are and how they communicate with their community. That trust was there from the start, and it has continued across two principals. When Steve Harper-Travers came on board in 2024, we worked together to understand his voice and direction, updated the photography to reflect the new leadership, and made sure the site felt current without losing what had been built.

Mellons Bay has a significant Chinese community among its families, and the school takes that seriously. The website is multilingual, and the school has created a dedicated Chinese Parent Group to make sure those families feel genuinely welcomed and supported, not just accommodated. That kind of thinking shapes how the site is built and what it needs to do.

This is an ongoing relationship. I do a photoshoot roughly every two years to keep the imagery fresh and true to where the school is right now, and we meet annually to review direction and make sure everything is still working as it should. Every school has its own rhythms and ways of doing things, and understanding those is as much a part of the work as the design. At Mellons Bay that includes things like the Friday Flyer, a weekly update that goes out to every family, which sits as a core feature of the site.
