Somerville Intermediate School
Somerville Intermediate is one of the larger intermediate schools in the Howick area, with around a thousand students in Years 7 and 8. It is a school that takes the intermediate school years seriously, offering purpose-built studios, a strong STEAM focus, and a breadth of specialist programmes that gives students something genuinely worth arriving for each day.
This was my first school project, back in 2013, and it remains one of the most satisfying long-term relationships I have. The challenge at the start was scale, presenting a large, complex school as a single cohesive community while making information easy to find for students, parents, and prospective families.
Over time, and through ongoing development, changing website systems, the site has evolved into something with a newsletter-style homepage that showcases learning and school life as it happens. The school has built the knowledge and confidence to drive that content themselves, and it shows.
Somerville owns their website completely. Staff add news, update content, and keep the learning visible without needing to come back to me for every change. I have done several photoshoots over the years to build out the image library, but the school now largely draws on that resource and their own photography.
My role has shifted to periodic reviews, audits, and strategic check-ins, looking at enrolment pathways, the international students section, and making sure the site continues to reflect where the school is heading. It is a good place to have arrived at. The work is embedded, the school is confident, and the website does its job every day.
